Musically, Drake has been relatively quiet all year; For his standards at least. Only jumping on select features and delivering to us “The Best In The World Pack”, after the Toronto Raptors won the NBA Championship. But, we all knew he couldn’t end the year without giving us something. That's what brings us to “War”. This song was released unexpectedly early Christmas eve and set the internet on fire.
Judging just from the title, you would be able to guess this was another one of Drake's “boss talk” loosies. Upon hearing it, I found out I was right, but with a twist. He appears on this track using a grime flow, closely related to how rappers in the UK rap. At first, it took me a while to get into the style he chose to approach this song with. Once I stepped back and listened to what he was saying, I was all in.
Frankly, the "tough-talk-Drake" is one of my favorite versions of him, musically. I enjoy hearing him talk that talk, making himself almost untouchable. You hear him rap like this and you have no choice but to believe every word of it. If you step back and look at it, the lines aren’t too far fetched from how he’s living. I also enjoy these types of songs from him because it lets us as listeners know where his head is at within that certain time. I don’t typically expect this to be the sound of his next album, but I am glad to see that he is still as focused as ever.
