Many artists do interviews from time to time, but very few are trying to run for president. For those unaware, the rapper/producer/entrepreneur Kanye West announced that he planned on running for president, which surprised some considering his past support of the current president, Donald Trump.
He was recently interviewed for Forbes Magazine where he had a LOT to say, and there are many people – both Kanye fans and non-Kanye fans – that are reacting to it. West announced that he was running for President of the United States on July 4th, and Tesla CEO Elon Musk even expressed his support for West. When asked about his slogan, West responded that it was a simple one-word slogan: “YES!” He elaborated that his running mate was Michelle Tidball, a Wyoming preacher. For those who are wondering whether this is all a massive publicity stunt, West insists that it is not and that he has finally registered to vote for the first time in his life.
He also appears to not support Trump anymore, claiming: “I don’t like that I caught wind that he hid in the bunker.” However, he also seemed to praise Trump later, suggesting that the president helped to “allow God to still be part of the conversation.” When questioned about his own MAGA red hat antics, he said that he was simply protesting the “segregation of votes.” He claims that God appoints the president and that if he is elected, then it was “God’s appointment.”
When it came time to discuss a cure to coronavirus, West’s response was nothing short of bizarre. He suggested that we should pray for a cure and that human beings were doing things that “make God mad.” Presidential candidates usually have ideas regarding foreign policy, but West downplayed the concept, saying plainly: “I haven’t developed it.” He claims that he is currently focused on the United States. He also revealed that he was pro-life, as well.
Other parts of the interview were quite strange, and it’s one of the reasons that the interview has gone viral. He stated that he would use “the framework of Wakanda”, hasn’t done much research on taxes and that he was against the death penalty. He said that Biden “wasn’t special”, also, and that he was “extremely cautious” about vaccines.
Some are questioning West’s mental health, while others point to the fact that Kanye West has been able to execute on some far-out ideas before. He is also now a billionaire, which certainly helps him in terms of resources to win a presidential race. He also received millions of dollars from the U.S. government through a PPP loan, as well. Many experts believe that Kanye West doesn’t have a legitimate chance to become president, but time will tell whether he is completely serious about a future in politics.
